Recordkeeping at Brooklyn Park City Hall is about to get a lot more efficient. The city is moving away from the venerable old Microfiche system to a new one called Laserfiche. The old system stored tiny photographs of documents on clear film. When someone needed a record, city staff would have to dig out the proper film, then search it for the right document using a magnifying display. That could be a time-consuming process.
The system, once a high tech way to reduce document storage space, is antiquated in the digital age. The Laserfiche replacement moves the records to computer-based storage. Not only will that make records searches more efficient, but also more available. Brooklyn Park staff says people will even be able to access records online.
“I don’t see any [drawbacks] right now,” says Jason Newby. He says the goal is a seamless transition to digital document storage. “That’s gonna take some time but if we do the time now, it’ll pay off.”
The city hopes to complete the project by early next year.
